The eight-cylinder engine with a working volume of 4.9 liters, equipped with a Doppel-VANOS system and eight individual throttle valves, develops a power of 400 hp. The BMW M5 E39 was equipped only with a manual 6-speed transmission, and the maximum speed of the model, like most powerful German cars, was forcibly limited to 250 km/h.
